The word violin comes from the term “vitula” which is Middle Latin for “stringed instrument”. It belongs to the violin family of string instruments along with cello, double bass and viola and is considered to be the smallest and highest-pitched in the group. It has four strings which are tuned a fifth apart and is shaped like an hourglass with an arching top and back to provide clearance for the bow which is used to produce the sound. The violin can be played in solo concerts or in ensembles like duets, quartets, chamber ensembles, and orchestras where it plays the “soprano” voice.
A person who plays the violin is called a violinist or a fiddler while a person who makes or repairs violins is called a luthier.
In order to learn how to play the violin, it is not enough to know how to rub the bow against the strings. It is also important that a violin student learns the facets of his/her instrument and gets acquainted with the violin’s parts and their specific functions. The different parts of a violin are as follows:
The Scroll – It is located on top of the violin and serves as a decorative part. It is hand carved and is used to hang the violin on a hook when not in use.
Peg box – This is where the pegs are inserted; 2 on each side. The pegs tighten the strings and act as the strings’ pitch regulators.
The Fingerboard – This is where a player puts the fingers of his/her left hand to play various notes.
The Sound Box – The front of the violin, also known as the belly table, spruce top or top plate and the back of the violin plus the ribs (sides of the violin) form the “sound box” of the violin.
Carved ‘f’ holes – They allow the sound vibrations of the violin to escape from the belly or sound board.
Bridge – It supports and lifts the strings above the fingerboard. It also transmits the strings’ sound vibrations to the belly.
Sound Post – It connects the belly to the back and transmits sound vibrations from the belly to the back.
Tailpiece – It connects the four strings to the tip of the violin’s body.
The Chin Rest – This is where the chin rests while playing.
This is a great violin instruction package to get started with. And at the incredible price it is being offered today, it is an unbeatable value.
